For 40 years, the science has been clear: one-on-one adaptive tutoring works. It's just been economically impossible to give every learner. Modern AI changes that — but only if you also have the operator expertise to apply it. We built Time Machine to combine both, so any growing company can have the kind of learning infrastructure that's traditionally only existed inside Fortune 500 enablement teams.

The pattern

The same wall, every company

Across dozens of growing companies — Cameron's 24-year career as a CRO and across the A16Z portfolio, Ike's work deploying AI software at Fortune 500 and the Federal Government — the same wall keeps appearing. Top performers can't be cloned fast enough. Senior teams burn out training. Knowledge stays trapped. Training stays broken. We saw this play out enough times to know it isn't a bad-vendor problem — it's a fundamental gap in how organizations learn.

The science

The methodology was always there

Benjamin Bloom proved in 1984 that one-on-one tutoring lifts learners to the 98th percentile. DARPA proved in 2009 that adaptive AI tutoring could deliver it. The science was settled — but each implementation required a multi-million-dollar build with 24 expert tutors and 6 content authors. It stayed in the lab.

The bet

AI plus operators makes it deployable

Modern AI removes the content-engineering bottleneck. But removing the bottleneck alone isn't enough — most companies still don't have the time, expertise, or resources to operate a learning system internally. So we combined the AI with the operator playbook. Our team does the work. Our software does the rest.

We were operators before we were a software company. Every product decision starts with: "Does this make our customers' workforces actually perform?" If the answer is no, we don't ship it — no matter how clever the AI.

We use DARPA, Bloom, and 40 years of education research because the science actually works. We don't lead with "AI" — we lead with what the science says, then explain how AI makes it deployable, and our team makes it operational.
